Media Mondays! Breath of Fire! One of my Favorite Videogame Series of All Time!

The image above is from none of the games for the record! Just trying to avoid copyright issues, ha ha!

The Breath of Fire series is hands down one of my favorite videogame series of all time. It honestly could even be my number one favorite RPG series ever created! It brings almost everything to the table I could ever hope to find in a videogame experience.

The original Breath of Fire was released for the Super Nintendo back in 1993 during the peak growing popularity of traditional turn-based RPGs after the success of Final Fantasy. This game was far ahead of it’s time in many aspects which have remained fairly consistent through most of the titles that followed.

The games two main characters, Ryu and Nina, are the only two whose names and likenesses remained constant throughout the series. They are in no way supposed to always be the same person as the games progress but rather “incarnations” if you will. Ryu always being a male character with blue hair having the ability to transform into various dragon forms. While, Nina is always portrayed as a blonde female having wings for different reasons. Many of the other characters often share resemblances to other characters but with none of them having this same exact relevance.

Most of the games involve what you would expect from traditional style RPGs being story driven, consisting of fairly linear game-play leading you to explore various towns/dungeons and having a turn based combat system. Many aspects of the games entail elements that have always set this series apart from others in a number of ways! One of the most notable being that every character is completely unique not only in style but also their skill sets both in and outside of combat.

I’ve always enjoyed games that give characters various abilities/items that they use to complete puzzles and interact with the environment outside of battle. I think this is one of the coolest things a typical game in this genre can implement to add to the game’s experience. This was something even the original Breath of Fire achieved, which in many ways was “ground-breaking” in it’s own way for what games like this had achieved and experimented with up to this point.

The abilities that each character has in battle throughout the series is a whole other aspect in and of itself. As I previously mentioned, the main character, Ryu, is able to transform into different dragon forms which is achieved in a completely different manner in almost every single game. He alone is not the only character with the ability to transform without spoiling anything for anyone who has yet to try or experience all the games in the series. I can’t think of many other games that have such a wide range of different styles and abilities in the way this series accomplishes. This has always been something that can make or break a game for me honestly!

(One of the main reasons I’m not all that big a fan of Final Fantasy 7 for example…simply because you can essentially make every character exactly the same minus their “limit breaks” but this is a topic left for another day, ha ha!)

The story and themes of all the games are inherently linked in a number of ways while also not explicitly stating so. A number of stories and histories are shared throughout the series that reveal information about the varying races and the progression of the world over time. These can range from the history of the dragon clan or the winged race that Nina descends from slowly losing their ability to both fly and shape-shift into birds. Also, in the last “true game” of the series, society has shifted to living underground which is only mildly elaborated upon as the story progresses.

My favorite game in the series will always be the third for me personally. Breath of Fire 3 was my first introduction to the series which probably leaves me slightly bias. Overall, I just can’t think of one aspect about it I didn’t simply fall completely in love with! The story-line, the graphics, the characters, and above all the particular way the dragon transformations are implemented will always leave it having a special place in my heart! Potentially, my favorite game of all time if I had to solely pick one.

Most seem to prefer the fourth from what I have read which is honestly probably my least favorite even though I enjoy many things about it that set it apart like all of the games in the series. I even enjoyed the fifth game which receives more mixed reviews than any other completely changing up almost every aspect of the original four.

A sixth was technically created as a mobile game never becoming successful enough to even be deemed worthy of a release in English. I would still love to try it someday being such a fan but to most it marked the “final nail in the coffin” for the series…

Capcom, the creators of the games, have been quoted as saying they wouldn’t completely rule out potentially making another game in the future but most have come to accept the series will never rise again.

I highly recommend trying any of the existing games if you enjoy turn-based RPGs!

Who knows what the future may hold for one of my favorite videogame series of all time?

I know I will never stop looking it up on occasion in hopes of seeing it’s revival one day in the future.

Only time will tell!

Thank you so much for Reading!

Media Mondays! MMORPGs! They have Saved my Life more than Once!

Never actually played this game but it looks awesome!

I know the title of this post may sound slightly extreme but in a lot of ways it’s honestly not that far off from the truth.

For those of you who may not be all that into the world of gaming, MMORPG stands for Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game and is exactly as it sounds!

Games that you can play with many others online (across the entire world usually nowadays) which can vary in setting and game-play but typically are more fantasy based but not limited to this particular genre.

They mostly involve designing a character, picking a class, leveling up, taking quests, events, and plenty of other activities revolved around this basic concept primarily.

With all types of games and genres there will typically always be a sense of community in which you can share your interest with others who enjoy it as well!

In MMORPGs, however, community is almost the most important aspect that can make or break a particular game!

Meeting other players in game, helping each other complete the aforementioned quests, partying up, and maybe even forming or joining a guild (a group of many players) stands at the forefront as one of the most defining features of the genre!

These types of games can involve some type of story line (if any at all) but even when they do, more often than not, it’s usually not even worth paying attention to or you slowly begin to lose interest in it over time. I can only think of a very slim number of games in which this was an exception at least for me personally.

While, the graphics, classes, abilities, combat styles, etc. all influence whether I will usually even try a new potential game, what always make me stay is the friends I make in the process!

YES, FRIENDS!

I know this might sound like a crazy concept to call people you meet online actual friends, whether it be in a game or not, but I feel like especially in this day and age how can this not be the case?

Some friends I’ve made from games I’ve played over the years that I have long since stopped playing I still regularly communicate with through various means and have made life lasting bonds in some cases! I mean you talk to, interact with, have fun with doing various activities while playing the game itself or just being social.

What makes this any different than what you would do with friends “in real life?”

I’ve had real conversations and experiences with people that have helped me get through some of the hardest times of my life, as well as me doing the same for them!

This above all else, as stated above, is the main reason I have always continued to play at least one of these types of games almost my entire life since my early teens!

I feel even more so for myself that this was such a great experience for me was because I was transgendered. It was always a place that I could fully be myself and that was always an amazing escape from my “regular life.” It honestly even helped me once I started to transition because it helped me “readjust” to myself socially in a sense?

Granted, this is not at all something that needs to be limited to my specific circumstances! I feel it can be just as beneficial for others who may not have many friends or feel like an outcast for example, to be able to gain an opportunity to make real connections with others.

I know plenty may not feel these can qualify as “real connections” but I ask once again, why is this any different than any other type of relationship?

In a sense, how many other activities can allow you to interact with so many different types of people from all across the globe simultaneously?

It truly is nothing short of amazing to me in so many ways!

As I often tend to do with my posts, I bring this particular interest of mine to attention not just strictly to express my love for it, but also to potentially open up the idea for someone else to try it if they may have never done so before!

Gaming in general has made many strides in all levels of society over the years and I’m so happy that it has because it’s an amazing unique hobby to have in my opinion!

Thank you so much for Reading!

Till next time!

Media Mondays! Old School Turn Based RPG’s! (A Slowly Declining Brand!)

You know that Ness thing sitting on top of the games is adorable!

This is probably without question my favorite video game genre of all time and I don’t imagine that changing anytime in the near future!

I have always enjoyed gaming pretty much from my earliest memories. You could almost say I grew up during the “dawn of gaming” but I’m well aware you can certainly say it was much earlier as well.

Don’t get me wrong!

I just mean I remember having a brand new original Nintendo with nothing to play except Mario and Duck Hunt.

I mean come on!

I was close enough, right?

It wasn’t until around the time I turned like 10 or 11 I suppose that I found the lovely world of RPG’s!

I have since, never turned back!

The first three games I can think of at the top of my head that brought about both my initial exposure and love for the genre have to be Earthbound, Breath of Fire 3, and Final Fantasy 7.

Earthbound and especially Final Fantasy 7 being super cliche!

But for being 11?

I had pretty good tastes!

And Breath of Fire 3? That’s like one of my favorite games of all time!

You have to give me that one for some originality!

After having played these few games, as well as the various others that followed…

That was It! I was hooked!

I have since proceeded to play practically every game included in the aforementioned series above and plenty of others!

Hands down! Without a Doubt!

My favorite genre is older turn based RPG’s!

I have to say though, I feel like a lot of love for the “turn based” style isn’t really as prevalent anymore. Games are able to obtain incredible feats that they were simply just not capable of yet when games like this were most popular.

I’m fully aware for example the whole “open world” thing for one is highly appealing! I love this genre as well, but it’s fairly not often used with a turn based style of battle.

It doesn’t really suit it.

A more live action approach to combat only makes more sense given the general feel and experience of these types of games. Once again, just reinforcing that I fully understand and all that!

Plenty of great games are still made to this day that still implement turn based combat within their work. I personally feel like it simply isn’t as common as it once was is all!

I’m not entirely sure where I wanted to go with this post if I’m being honest?

I guess I’ve just wanted to cover at least a few basic topics regarding what I’ve claimed to be “all about” when I first started blogging?

I feel it probably is for the best I stop now.

If you even begin to get me started ranting on any one RPG…?

Let’s just say I’ll never stop! Even more so if you like it, too!

We shall leave further in depth analysis of this genre and/or if I like/dislike a particular game in the future!

Look forward to an Anime based post in next week’s Media Mondays!

Thank you anyone who enjoyed reading this!

Let’s not let the classic turn based RPG style fall into ruins….

FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster_20150216170259
